In 1973, the year I turned 18, I'd been a fan of Velvet Underground and then Lou Reed for almost five years. My youngest uncle was in his mid/late 20's in 1968/69 and had just been to the Andy Warhol Exhibition at the Modern Museum in Stockholm, Sweden. As I regarded him like he was my big brother, I eagerly tapped into everything he said about the exhibition. A few weeks I went out and bought Velvet Underground Feat Nico (being perhaps my third or fourth album ever).

The sensation could only be equalled by the first two albums I'd bought with my own money, the year before: the old cut-out John Lee Hooker album Best of John Lee Hooker (Vee Jay, 1961) and the Mothers Of Invention-album We're Only In It For The Money.

As the years went by, I followed the career of Velvet U and Lou Reed and buying all the albums. But it wasn't untill Berlin, I'd a similar sensational musical experience, Yes, there'd been some great albums. But Berlin was not a pop- or r'n'r-thrill - it was a piece of musical art.

What did I care about reviews and poor sales - Berlin hit me with all the powers great music will generate. The world is full of beautiful women, but when you meet that one special woman she'll stand out even in a crowd of beautiful women. And the Berlin-album was very much like this.

Throughout my own artistic career, my own musical creativity and integrity, have been more inspired by the VU feat Nico/Berlin-albums than any other album. The artist being out on the edge.

The world is full of talented composers of three chord popmusic. But it takes an artist and a poet to make the three chords interesting. Given the opportunity, Lou is the Grandmaster at this.

Lou used up all the money and recordbusiness cred that came with the Transformer-album, to cut this artistic manifesto. It flunked in the eyes of the recordbusiness, media and ignorancy of the general public. They all wanted the safe Gay-junkie NYC-weirdo in a world of blooming glam and gay-chic r'n'r. The artist you can wrap up and massmarket with artists like David Bowie.

I sort of married musically, Berlin back in 1973. It's been a very happy marriage, so to say. Today, approaching my mid-50's, Berlin still stand out as a formative artistic statement. And the stageversion of Berlin, on film and Live, proves its' timeless qualities.

I've had so many one-nite stands with other albums, but I've always returned to Berlin. Still rate it (together with the beforementioned John Lee Hooker- and VU feat Nico-albums) as one of my top-3 fave albums of all times.

I look forward to the release of the dvd.
